Standing together for safety
Croydon launches Bystander Intervention Training in memory of Elianne Andam
As part of its wider commitment to community safety and inclusion, Centrale & Whitgift Shopping Centre in partnership with HERSANA CIC is hosting a free Community Bystander Intervention training session at the London South Bank University Croydon Campus (3 Wellesley Road, CR0 2AG) on 6 December from 2:30pm-4:30 pm.
The 2-hour workshop has been designed to equip local businesses, community groups and members of the public with the skills to recognise and challenge behaviours such as misogyny, sexual harassment discrimination and anti-social conduct, and to intervene safely and proactively when they witness these in everyday settings.
This training is offered in response to the tragic death of 15-year-old Elianne Andam, who was the victim of knife crime in Croydon in September 2023. To honour her memory, a mural was unveiled in September 2024 outside the Whitgift Shopping Centre on Wellesley Road, created by local artist Alec Saunders and supported by community partners.
The roll-out of this bystander training forms part of the legacy of Elianne’s life – a movement to create safer public spaces in Croydon, where communities, businesses and residents all take part in protecting one another and standing against harm.
We encourage organisations, businesses and community groups in Croydon to join us for this important initiative – by attending the training, spreading the word and actively contributing to a safer, more inclusive borough for all.
A slot can be booked for the training here.
