Step aside Taylor….The BRIT School are next in Croydon’s Creative Spotlight
Following the excitement around Taylor Swift’s Opalite music video, filmed at the Whitgift Centre, Croydon’s town centre has continued to show why it is such a natural home for culture, creativity and performance.
Through June, Whitgift Square has been filled with music and dance as The BRIT School brought a free family-friendly Musical Theatre Singalong to the heart of the town centre. A choir of 75 aspiring young artists performed a medley of musical theatre songs, bringing energy, joy and plenty of voices to the town centre.
The performances gave visitors the chance to enjoy live music from one of the UK’s leading free performing and creative arts schools, right in the middle of Croydon. After the singalong, students and staff from The BRIT School also met with young people and families, sharing insights into the school’s renowned Musical Theatre course and offering advice for future applicants.
The celebration of local talent continues his summer with BRIT Dance x Costa Del Croydon: Summer Has Landed! On 17 July, 50 BRIT School performers will bring an unexpected burst of colour, music and movement to North End, with high-energy choreography and feel-good summer performances marking the return of Costa Del Croydon.
Known for nurturing celebrated talent including RAYE, Olivia Dean and Tom Holland, The BRIT School has played a major role in shaping the UK’s cultural scene. Its alumni have sold more than 280 million albums, generated over 70 billion streams, and won major awards including BRITs, Grammys, BAFTAs and Oscars.
From Swifties visiting the now-iconic Whitgift escalator to the next generation of performers taking over Whitgift Square, Croydon’s creative energy is always on full display. As The Croydon Project progresses, moments like these show the role the town centre can play as a place for culture, community and new talent.
